Guns Don't Kill People, People Blah Blah Blah
So in the wake of the movie theater massacre in Colorado I've been thinking a lot about gun control and how things like this happen in this country. I would first like to say I am not hardcore left or right on this issue. I think the NRA are a bunch of thug assholes that do more to damage the reputation of good gun owners then they do to protect people's rights. On the other hand I do not think people should be disallowed the right to have guns.
Personally I do not own a gun and I've only shot a beebe gun and a 22 in my life. I do not hunt and I just never really got into guns. To each their own though and I do respect people who hunt or who are enthusiasts of guns.
Now with all of that background information on my personal gun habits I would like to get back to this shooting and some of the arguments I've heard come from people on gun control after it happened. First I would like to say that the old saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" is lazy and ignorant. It is one of those things you say when you have no relevant arguments to use with people. When someone makes this statement I know they are a dullered and not worth arguing with on this subject. The fact is people kill people with guns. "What if he had a knife?" well then once he stabbed a couple of people a big group of people would have disarmed him.
The real argument to be made here is how the fuck did this guy get body armor and 1,500 rounds of automatic weapon ammunition without it raising a big fucking red flag? In fact how are you able to buy body armor if you are not in the military or law enforcement? Well since I guess it is legal to buy right now how come the place that sold this to him didn't contact the FBI or local police afterwards and say something like "Well he passed all of the background checks but it is odd that he is buying this stuff and he is not in a career field where he would be using this so you guys should probably look into this" I wonder if the company that sold this to him is liable? If I was a victim or family member I would sue the shit out of them for failing to protect people in the name of profit.
I will take this argument a step farther and say that unless you are in a field i.e military, or police, you probably should not be allowed to buy large caliber automatic weapons. Or better yet make it a very deep background check process where you have to explain why you want this weapon and pass a psychological test as well as have no criminal or mental health history.
So to finish this off I would say that this was a tragedy and it is unfortunate that shit like this happens. I do feel like we are lucky that we don't live in a country where this is more common. Do I think knee jerk gun control should be put into place because of this? NO, but I do think common sense gun control should be implemented to make it hard for assholes to get body armor and shit that they have no business owning. It will not stop every psycho from pulling something off but it would make it harder. I'm all for hunting or gun owning as a hobby or whatever. If it is your passion and you are not hurting anyone that is cool with me but body armor? Really? I know there are other problems but the body armor thing I can't get over that it is possible for some average Joe asshole to buy that stuff. Anyways thanks for reading and I hope you learned something like not to use that dull argument "Guns don't kill people... 'I'm tuning you out cause you are a dope'.
