The Wire: A Deep Show

Not all of my blog posts will be about some big topic that I want to give my opinion on. For instance this post is about a show that I just finished watching called "The Wire". Many of you may have already watched it or at least heard of it. It was a television show on HBO from 2002-2008.

When I first heard about the show I always had the impression that it was a black show that was about inner city gang violence. So when it originally aired I did not watch it. So a year or two ago I kept hearing people talk about how good that show was and how it was one of the best shows ever on television. I finally decided to watch it and it took awhile but I have now finished the show.

The Wire is really not about gangs or police, it is about a city, the city of Baltimore. As someone that considers himself a writer I have to say that this is probably one of the most well written shows in the history of television.

The series has you follow the characters from the first season which is an introduction to the main gang and main police, to the second season which follows the Baltimore Dock Unions, to the third season which brings in the Baltimore Political landscape into focus, to the fourth season which brings in the younger generation and shows the problems with the school system, to the final season which follows the media-specifically the failing newspaper industry.

The way they tie everything together in the final few episodes is just beyond brilliant. You see how each character evolves, many of them evolve into a different version of a character who has already died or has moved into a different role. This is one of the few series that I have ever watched where the pay off at the end was one of the best parts of watching it all the way through. I find myself thinking about different characters and what they did with them and how it seemed very unfair to some, appropriate for others, and better than expected for a few, which really is a microcosm of how real life is.

So no spoilers from this particular blog, but I hope some of you will read this and be interested in watching the show. If you have HBO you can watch the whole series online at HBO Go, or maybe Netflix has it I'm not sure about that.
